What is Somatic Experiencing®?

Somatic Experiencing® (SE) is a mindfulness-based, body-oriented approach to stress and difficult experiences developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine.

In SE, intense experiences are understood to be reflected in the nervous system and to affect its natural capacity for self-regulation.

Somatic Experiencing® takes a whole-person approach that includes body awareness and a sense of orientation. It brings attention to the physical sensations and nervous system responses that can accompany difficult experiences, alongside the events and their psychological aspects.

This gentle approach can help people notice inner processes in more detail and experience greater flexibility, stability, and inner balance.

Paying gentle attention to physical sensations can help you notice inner tension more clearly. In a supportive setting, with time and care, you can begin to recognize your own patterns of self-regulation.

Many people seek SE-informed support when dealing with ongoing stress, inner tension, or difficult life events. The approach emphasizes body awareness and self-regulation and can help you explore what stability, orientation, and inner balance feel like.

SE is offered here as support that draws on your own resources through bodywork and supervision or coaching. No medical care, psychotherapy, diagnosis, or treatment is provided.

in conversation with Dr. Peter A. Levine

In this interview, Dr. Peter A. Levine, the founder of Somatic Experiencing®, describes how the approach works with overwhelming or distressing experiences. He explains how intense experiences may affect the body and nervous system, leaving a person frozen or on alert, as though an impulse to survive had been interrupted.

Dr. Levine describes how wild animals naturally complete stress cycles and how these principles might inform our own experience. The focus is on recognizing persistent response patterns and giving the nervous system room to orient and self-regulate.

The conversation explores how Somatic Experiencing® can support people in working with difficult experiences and developing more flexibility, balance, and connection in everyday life.

The interview is an introduction for anyone interested in the fundamentals of Somatic Experiencing®. Watch it to explore how body awareness may contribute to inner stability and vitality. 🌿

„Trauma ist eine Tatsache des Lebens.
Es muss jedoch keine lebenslange Verurteilung sein.“

Begründer von Somatic Experiencing®

“In Somatic Experiencing, we learn that the body carries the traces of our past and the key to our healing.”

Working with trauma through touch

The Origins
of Somatic Experiencing®

How a body-oriented approach began

Dr. Peter A. Levine’s development of Somatic Experiencing® began in the 1970s during his interdisciplinary studies in medicine and psychology. His observations of animals in the wild were a major influence. He noticed that, despite repeated threats, animals rarely showed lasting stress responses and appeared to have natural ways of releasing tension.

These observations led to decades of study and practice focused on stress and difficult experiences. Levine combined perspectives from biology, neuroscience, and body-oriented traditions into an approach centered on the body and mindful awareness.

Somatic Experiencing® was formally introduced in 1996 and has since spread internationally. It is now taught in training programs in many countries. Many practitioners say SE has given them new ways to explore body awareness and self-regulation in everyday life.

This quote captures a central idea in Levine’s approach. Trauma is understood in relation to the nervous system and physical self-regulation as well as to psychological experience.

Levine sought to help people notice and use their innate capacity for regulation and integration.

His work has influenced body-oriented approaches to stress internationally and helped develop perspectives on resilience and self-regulation.

Somatic Experiencing® emphasizes the role of the body in growth and integration, opening up new ways to think about inner balance and connection.

“Trauma is what we hold inside when we don’t have the resources to process what happened to us.”

Dr. Peter A. Levine

Every touch is a dialogue.
Each session invites you to listen more closely to your body’s wisdom and discover new experiences.

A space of mindful presence can make room for a greater sense of inner balance.
You can gently explore familiar patterns of tension and response and make room for new experiences at your own pace.

Arthur Munyer and Peter A. Levine: A Professional Connection

Arthur’s training in somatic practice brought him into contact with Dr. Peter A. Levine, the founder of Somatic Experiencing® (SE). The encounter helped shape his approach and marked a period when he began bringing more of what he had learned into his bodywork and supervision.

Arthur completed the three-year Somatic Experiencing® training from 2006 to 2009 and became certified as a Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner (SEP) in 2009. Further training and workshops included work with the diaphragm, the polyvagal system, and body-oriented regulation.

Studying SE broadened Arthur’s professional perspective. Drawing on years of experience in different forms of bodywork, he began incorporating key principles of Somatic Experiencing® into his practice.

A more detailed understanding of self-regulation and the nervous system enriched his approach. It helped him work with clients in ways that draw on their resources and support orientation, presence, inner balance, and connection.

Frequently asked questions about Somatic Experiencing

Was ist Somatic Experiencing®?

What happens in a Somatic Experiencing® session?

An SE-informed session usually begins with a short check-in about how you’re doing. You’re then invited to pay gentle attention to what you feel in your body.

With gentle questions and steady support, you may notice subtle changes, such as warmth, coolness, tingling, small urges to move, or changes in your breathing.

You explore these sensations at your own pace in a supportive setting. Pausing to look around, feel your feet on the floor, or notice your breath can help you stay present and steady.

The focus is on building on your resources and supporting nervous system self-regulation.

Scope: Bodywork and supervision or coaching. No medical treatment or psychotherapy is provided.

Where is trauma stored in the body?

How difficult experiences can show up in the body
Intense or distressing experiences can be felt physically. Some people describe patterns such as these:

Nervous system
Periods of increased alertness or restlessness, sometimes with exhaustion, a stronger startle response, or changes in sleep.

Muscles
Patterns of tension or holding that may feel like pressure or discomfort.

Breathing and digestion
Shallower breathing, tightness, or digestive reactions during stress.

Connective tissue and fascia
A feeling of stiffness or restricted movement.

SE-informed work invites you to notice these sensations and gradually find more orientation and stability. It draws on your resources, works in manageable steps, and supports self-regulation through practices such as pausing, looking around the room, or gently noticing the breath.

This is supportive, non-medical work. The aim is to foster more flexibility, inner balance, and connection in your experience.

Wie lange dauert eine SE-Supervision?

The length of SE-informed support depends on what brings you in, your pace, and how the process unfolds. Some people notice shifts or new insights after a few appointments, while others choose longer-term support.

Weekly or biweekly appointments are common. We agree on a schedule together and adjust it as needed.

The emphasis is on working in manageable steps that build on your resources and support self-regulation.

Please note:
Bodywork and supervision or coaching. No medical treatment or psychotherapy is provided.
For medical care or psychotherapy, please consult a licensed professional.

Ist Somatic Experiencing® für alle Arten von Traumata geeignet?

Who may benefit from SE-informed support

SE-informed work may help some people navigate difficult or trauma-related experiences, such as accidents, violence, or difficult childhood experiences. Some people use it after a single event, while others seek support with ongoing stress.

SE can complement medical care or psychotherapy. Serious mental health concerns should be assessed by licensed professionals.

Scope: Bodywork and supervision or coaching. No medical treatment or psychotherapy is provided.
If you’re in an acute crisis or think you may have a mental health or medical condition, please contact a licensed physician or psychotherapist.

Was unterscheidet SE von gesprächs- oder verhaltensorientierten Ansätzen?

SE differs in some ways from talk-based or behavioral approaches. It focuses on noticing your body and what you’re feeling in the moment. You can focus on physical signals and inner responses without recounting distressing events in detail.

The approach is mindful and draws on your own resources. Its aim is to help you notice what you’re experiencing and strengthen your ability to self-regulate. It assumes that people have a natural capacity for regulation that can be recognized and supported. The practitioner provides a safe, structured setting for this work.

Hinweis: Körperarbeit & Supervision/Coaching – keine Heilkunde, keine Psychotherapie.

Rahmen: Körperarbeit & Supervision/Coaching – keine Heilkunde, keine Psychotherapie.

Rahmen: Körperarbeit & Supervision/Coaching – keine Heilkunde, keine Psychotherapie.
